Jet Drive Exchange Yamaha jet boat running across the bay near Ocean City, NJ with marsh shoreline in the background

If you are new to boating around Ocean City, NJ, the first question is usually the same: do we stay on the bay, or do we go out into the ocean?

Both are right outside our docks. The better answer is not which one is “best.” It is which one fits the day, the crew, and the forecast. That is how most Jet Drive Exchange members plan a Boat Ride or Ride All outing from Boat Yard Marina in Somers Point or All Seasons Marina in Marmora.

What “the bay” means here

When locals say the bay near Ocean City, they usually mean the wide, protected water between the barrier islands and the mainland. From our Somers Point and Marmora docks you can be on that water in minutes.

Bay days are the workhorse of a South Jersey season. The water is generally flatter than the ocean. You can cruise, fish, tube, or just float without committing to an inlet run. Our Ocean City page puts it simply: the large bay is one of the best places to play on the water in South Jersey, and the same docks also put you close to a quick trip toward the ocean for fishing or a run up the Tuckahoe River for tubing.

A typical 5-hour reservation fits a bay day cleanly. You have time to leave the dock, pick a stretch of water, enjoy it, and still get back without rushing the unload.

What an ocean day actually involves

An ocean day starts the same way, at the same docks, then adds the inlet. Getting from bay water to ocean water means running through an inlet when conditions allow. That is a different kind of outing than a calm bay cruise.

Ocean days reward planning. Check the forecast, the wind, and how your crew feels about chop. A Boat Ride membership gives you unlimited access to one boat per reservation. Ride All gives you one boat or two jet skis. Either way, the boat still has to match the day. If you are not sure which hull fits an ocean run versus a bay float, ask us before you book. That is what the one-on-one orientation is for.

Guests can ride as passengers. Only primary members operate the boat or jet skis, and every operator needs a valid Boaters Safety Certificate. More detail is on our F.A.Q.

Bay vs ocean: a practical compare

Use this as a quick filter when you open the Boat Club App.

Bay is usually better when:

  • You have kids or first-time guests aboard
  • The wind is up and you want more protection
  • Tubing, slow fishing, or a scenic cruise is the plan
  • You want most of the 5 hours to feel easy, not transitional

Ocean is usually better when:

  • Conditions at the inlet and outside look good
  • Fishing or an open-water run is the goal
  • Your crew is comfortable with more motion
  • You planned the day around that specific outing, not a last-minute switch

Plenty of members do both in one season. That is the point of a club with boats ready at two docks.

How the docks change the picture

Boat Yard Marina (101 Longport Somers Point Blvd., Somers Point) and All Seasons Marina (551 Roosevelt Blvd., Marmora) are both close to Ocean City, just over the Longport and 34th Street bridges. From either dock you can stay in the bay system or head toward ocean access when the day calls for it.

You do not need a trailer for either plan. The boat is at the dock, fueled for the next member when it comes back in. You pay for the fuel you used that day. Season runs May through October.

How reservations fit bay and ocean plans

Each reservation is 5 hours. Members can hold up to three future reservations at a time, and by default one of those can be a weekend slot. As soon as you finish an outing, you can book the next one. There is no cap on how many outings you take in a season.

If you want a longer day, Double Time lets you book back-to-back slots for a full-day outing, or book two weekend reservations. Same-day bookings are possible by calling, emailing, or texting when a boat is free, but keeping three future reservations on the books is how regulars lock in the days they care about.

If packing for either kind of day is the next question, see What to Bring on a Boat Club Outing near Ocean City, NJ.

Which membership to start with

For most people comparing bay days and ocean days, we lead with Boat Ride or Ride All.

  • Boat Ride: unlimited access to one boat per reservation. The straightforward choice for family bay days and mixed cruising.
  • Ride All: one boat or two jet skis per reservation. Useful if some days you want a boat on the bay and other days you want skis.

Ski-only packages exist if that is what you asked about. For most households, Boat Ride and Ride All cover the bay-vs-ocean question.

A simple way to decide the morning of

  1. Check wind, seas, and how your crew feels.
  2. Pick bay if you want easy water and more flexibility.
  3. Pick ocean only when the inlet and outside look right.
  4. Book the boat that matches that plan, not the other way around.
  5. Leave a little time at the end of the 5 hours to unload so the next member gets a clean start.

Ready to try both kinds of days?

If you have been weighing boat ownership against a club so you can use the bay and the ocean without the trailer and storage, start with Boat Ride or Ride All and see how the season actually feels.

See you on the water.
